Our family is contemplating taking a short (about 5-7 days) vacation to NYC sometime this fall.

I was there many moons ago before this KD affliction and the most vivid images are the subways and its stairs. It's obvious that I won't be doing that, but I was wondering if anyone is familiar enough and can provide me with suggestions like:
* Best hotel (3/4 stars) with handicap facilities near most tourist traps... ehmm, attractions.
* Best attractions that are handicap friendly.
* Best way to get around (cannot do public buses). How's the driving compared to California? Are cabs the most logical way?
* Best restaurants (specially ethinic) that are handicapped accessible?
* Any other suggestions would be most appreciated!!!!

Thank you.

It has been a few years since my last visit to the City, so I can only marginally comment. Taxi cabs are still the best way to get around in my opinion. Subways, as you mentioned, are terrible because of the stairs. The two biggest concerns/problems I had while visiting were: (1) The heating grates in the sidewalks are not cane-friendly. Twice I was talking while walking and my cane went down through the grates. Fortunately I was able to catch myself before falling. (2) As you mentioned, many of the restaurants and hotels are not always handicap-friendly. Many have steps going into or steps inside. I hope someone else can help with better info on places to stay and eat. One site that might be able to help is: http://www.sath.org/
It is the Society for Accessble Travel and Hospitality.

Good luck and have a great trip.
