Registered: 10-07-2005 Posts: 7 | Does anyone have any experience of Methycobal (Methycobalmine) which is, I understand, high dosage vitamin B12? I have recently transferred to a new specialist in a new country who recommends it. I see B12 is supposed to help nerves but is there any prove or experiential evidence that it is effective? Any comments would be welcome. Robert |

Robert, in a chat room a couple of years ago, Dr. Grunseich from, NIH stated the following: "In general B vitamins are good, but the B6 specifically can be bad if taken at a high dose. it really depends on which B vitamin it is. B6 is a vitamin to avoid because it can cause neuropathy if taken in high doses. It is good to take a multivitamin. I would take a mutlivitamin to get B6, and not take any additional supplementation. It is fine to take additional amounts of B12. B12 is helpful for the nervous system." Unfortunately, there was nothing in the chat as to the amount of B12. I was tested and found to be B12 deficient. So I take 1,000 mcg every day with my other vitamins. Perhaps others have more knowledge. |

I took 2 a week as the bottle was recommending one a day. My B-12 levels came up to the normal range. ================= email:rheitzman at gmail |

Most nutritional authorities say that methylcobalamin is the form that is best absorbed by the human body. As Bruce said above in the quotation from Dr. Grunseich, it is generally known that B12 is beneficial to the nervous system. However, I am not aware of any studies that looked at B12 specifically for KD. |

Now I take a supplement 250 mcg once every week or two. B12 is stored in the liver and it can store several years worth of the vitamin. If your level is low it can take a while to bring it back up as your liver will be depleted. But if your level is normal supposedly any excess is excreted in your urine and additional supplementation is unlikely to be of much benefit. |
