Anyway, I’m a 38 year old male with KD, currently living in the north of England (U.K.) and I’m just wondering if there weee any others in a similar age range to me, in the earlier stages of KD so that I can get a little insight into their exercise habits. I already visit a specialist once a year in London, they now have a full time physiotherapist on hand who specialises in KD which is a very useful service to have available. My exercise routine currently consists of weight training with bouts of cardio/HIT bits here and there. I also jog once or twice a week (shorter distances these days, perhaps just 5k per session) and I do Karate once a week. I’ve made some significant adjustments to my on and off weight training in the last 12 months, ditching the heavier dumbbells entirely and instead opting for more reps with much lower weights. This allows me to get a moderate amounts of reps in whilst being able to stop comfortably before exhaustion/failure. On a scale of 1-10 I’m probably pushing myself to 6/7 during my weight sets, but always stopping comfortably before failure. I’ve never been a beefcake, I suspect it’s a combination of my genetics as well as KD specifically, but the toning is definitely progressing these last couple of months and my strength is definitely improving. I’m reasonably confident that I can read my own body at the moment and not push myself too hard, and I’m aware that as the years go by I will have to adjust appropriately. My diet is reasonably goo, but I could always cut down on the sweet treats. My cholesterol is in another dimension but this is thought to be hereditary. I was placed on a fibrate (Ezitemibe) a few months ago and will be due a blood test soon to see if it is making a difference. I’m vegetarian and have been since the age of about 20/21. I’ve cut down on the full fat cheeses due to the cholesterol and I’ve really upped my bean, legume and egg intake. I’ve also really gotten into the fat free dairy such as Quark, it’s not everyone’s first choice but I actually quite like it. My specialist(s) see no issue with this and are generally supportive of a balanced/Mediterranean type diet. It seems to be providing me with adequate protein intake, and I take magnesium and Omega 3 supplements with breakfast. My symptoms at present are mostly confined to cramps (leg and neck especially), tremors and occasional fatigue, but not very severe. No obvious swallowing issues yet, but I’ve definitely begun to notice more pins and needles sensations when tensing certain muscles, both during workouts and even without any weight at all. It’s particularly noticeable in my triceps and chest muscles. Whenever I tense there is quite a significant pins and needles sensation, coupled with a certain degree of loss of sensation. Anyone at a similar stage to me, or perhaps a little more advanced through KD? Any solid fitness tips, or anything you had wished you had done differently. |
