Lump in throat

Lloyd experiences a throat lump that is "uncomfortable" and can make speaking difficult and is slowly affecting his breathing. He is afraid that this is the beginning of the "end" in that breathing mechanisms in the throat might be deteriorating. Sitting up, even at night, has helped, but the lump is not going away as well as it used to. A neurologist told him he had "sagging" tissues. Lloyd snorts salt water a few times a day to clear nostrils, which seems to help some. He also uses Flonase.

I have read plenty on the issues of swallowing (a subject with which we too are quite personally familiar), but very little about "lumps". Does anyone else know this as a common symptom? Is there any treatment. I'd hate to think about surgery.

Having been a long time KD sufferer, I cannot recall nor experienced any reports similar to your Lloyd's.

My recommendation would be to go back to the beginning and make sure this symptom is KD related. Have you had a second opinion?

Sometimes we focus so much on our particular disease that we tend to ignore anything else which may be the real cause.

I'm sorry I can't supply any additional suggestions. Perhaps someone else in the forum can chime in?

Thank you. We'll specify the symptom and what happens with current attempts to alleviate and let his doctor know so he can evaluate the symptom.

Luis is correct, I have not heard of a lump in the throat as a condition related to KD. That does not mean it is not KD related, however. It just seems that this would have shown up in others with KD.

A second opinion from a specialist is warranted. The condition could be the result of some other health issue and exaggerated because of the KD.

I would recommend that your husband also practice some throat and swallowing exercises to see if that helps. I perform these exercises for several minutes each morning and have seen a strengthening in those muscles.

I hope this helps. Please keep us advised.

Thank you for all your suggestions. The GP might have suggested Mucinex, but it was not until this week that it was tried when the health aide mentioned it. There has been no lump since. Both the GP and the neurologist had noticed what could be swelling and the GP said drainage could be the irritant. I had been doubtful that what I was feeling could just be swelling. We learn everyday, don't we!
I exercise as much as the 88 year old body and energy level will permit.

Good to hear that it is not anything serious. I keep Mucinex in my drawer when drainage becomes an issue and it works.

I'm really glad that this lump wasn't as serious as originally thought. I too, develop quite a bit of phlem at times and use Mucinex when needed.

Take care...
